Our Mission

Cypress Lucky Mutt Rescue is a Houston area 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned puppies and dogs from high-kill shelters and owners who can no longer care for them.

By working with committed volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, trainers, and boarding facilities, we are able to rescue countless animals every year, provide them with loving foster care, and ultimately find them well-matched, carefully screened forever homes.

The “Why”

Houston, TX is facing a serious homeless pet crisis that many in our community don’t realize is happening right now.

Tens of thousands of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens enter local shelters every year, and city facilities (like BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions) take in more than 15,000 animals annually, with many more brought in as strays or owner surrenders than there are homes available for them.

At times, shelters in Houston and Harris County operate well above capacity—with hundreds of animals crowded in spaces designed for far fewer, prompting pauses on public intakes and emergency measures to prevent euthanasia.

This challenge is driven by a combination of factors: Houston’s warm climate supports year-round breeding, there are minimal spay/neuter laws, and low-cost reproductive services are harder to access than needed—leading to more puppies and kittens being born into a community that simply doesn’t have the homes for them. That means not only do shelters stay overcrowded, but many healthy animals end up on euthanasia lists simply because there aren’t enough adopters, fosters, or volunteers to give them safe, loving homes. Increasing awareness about responsible pet ownership—especially spaying and neutering, choosing adoption over purchasing from breeders, and supporting local rescues—can directly reduce animal suffering and save countless lives in Greater Houston.

What makes Cypress lucky Mutt unique?

We are a foster-based rescue.

1

We don’t operate a shelter. Our dogs live in volunteer foster homes, allowing us to provide individualized care and real-life socialization.

We were established in 2013.

2

We’ve been rescuing dogs for over a decade. Our experience means informed decisions, trusted processes, and dogs placed thoughtfully (not rushed).

We are 100% volunteer-run.

3

Every role is filled by dedicated volunteers. That means no paid staff, no hidden agendas…just people who put dogs and adopters first.

We are a Texas rescue with N/E reach.

We rescue dogs in Houston and place them in homes locally and in the Northeast. Registered in New York, we safely transport dogs to vetted adopters, expanding our reach and allowing us to save even more lives.
